Stanford Summer Scamper by Rebecca Jiang An annual race that helps support the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and the programs of pediatric health at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, the Stanford Summer Scamper showed to be an extremely transformative experience for many Dry Ice members’ perspectives of community outreach. Nine representatives from Dry Ice were able to attend and participate in running the 5k race on Sunday, June 24, 2018, where we learned more about the programs and patients we were supporting, including a 9 month-old named Melina, whose live had been saved by Lucile Packard not once but a number of times. All nine representatives additionally donated a total of $ in support of the children’s health initiatives in Palo Alto.
Through having engaged conversations with both the other attendees of the race and the representatives of both Lucile Packard and the Stanford School of Medicine, we were able to share about our involvement with FIRST Tech Challenge and Robotics, spreading the impact we’ve felt about interacting with STEM from a young age. Several parents were intrigued by what FIRST Robotics was, and we explained the principles of collaboration and innovation that we founded ourselves on, detailing the opportunities we could provide for their children as well. It was really interesting to see two seemingly different sides of science -- medicine and mechanical engineering -- come together to produce an impact on both parties.
